What is a Stemless Wine Glass?
A stemless wine glass is a glass that retains the same practical shape as a traditional wine glass for aeration and aromatics, but instead of a stem, the bowl has a flat bottom that the glass will sit on.
Advantages of a Stemless Wine Glass
Space Saving
Stemless wine glasses are much more compact since they don’t have a long stem and base attached to them.
This means that they take up less cabinet space and are much easier to store.
It also means that they are easier and safer to pack for things like going to the beach or to take with you on picnics.
More Durable
The lack of a traditional stem also means that the wine glasses are more durable. The thin stem is a weak point in the wine glass, especially where the stem meets the bowl.
A feature that makes them much more prone to breaking when they are spilled or in the dishwasher. The stemless wine glass doesn’t have this weak point.

Disadvantages of a Stemless Wine Glass
Temperature Transference
Because a stemless wine glass lacks any stem, you are forced to hold the glass by the bowl. This will cause the natural warmth from your hand to begin to warm the glass.
Because wine is supposed to be served at a specific temperature, the warmth from your hand will start to change the flavor and aroma of your wine over time.
Fingerprints
The significant advantage of a stem is that you won’t get fingerprints on the bowl.
Fingerprints are not something that will affect your wine, but they don’t look very good on the side of your glass. Unfortunately, fingerprints are something you will probably find all over the side of a stemless wine glass.
Difficult Swirl
People often find it harder to swirl the wine in a stemless wine glass. A process that is crucial to open up the bouquet of many red wines.
Although some glassmakers have added things like a deep “V” into the bottom of their glasses, significantly increasing aeration when swirling your wine. This has cut down on this issue considerably if it is something you’re anxious about.
