What are Glasses For Juicing?
Glasses for juicing are special containers that will hold your fresh-squeezed juice so that it doesn’t go rancid. These juice glasses will often have an airtight seal, and they will allow you to store your juice so that you can make multiple days worth at one time. Plus, they make it easy for busy people to remain healthy and easily take their fresh-squeezed juice on the go.
Freshly squeezed juice will begin to degrade and lose nutrients the minute it comes into contact with the air. So, getting a glass that will keep it properly contained is critical for preserving nutrients and freshness.
Things to Look For in a Proper Juice Glass
Seal
The seal on the glass that is going to hold your fresh-squeezed juice is extremely important. The juice will begin to go bad the minute that it comes in contact with the air. So, you want to make sure that you find a glass with an airtight seal so that your juice won’t oxidize and will last as long as possible.
Materials
Plastic
Plastic is one material that is commonly used to make many different types of storage containers. That is because it is transparent so that you can see what is stored inside, and it is cheap to manufacture.
The problem with plastic is that it also has the potential to leach chemicals into whatever you store inside of it. Plastic is also porous, so it tends to absorb the flavors and odors of whatever is stored inside it. And when that thing is fresh-squeezed juices with very pungent smells and vibrant colors. You don’t want your storage containers absorbing that and then transferring it to other drinks.
Glass
Glass is the ideal storage material for juicing because it will never leach any unwanted chemicals into your juice. It is still transparent so that you can see what is inside, but glass is nonporous, so it won’t absorb any flavors or odors. This makes it super easy to clean and means that you can use the same glass to store multiple different juices.
Metal
Getting a metal container to hold your fresh-squeezed juice is another common option. Some people worry about the acid degrading the metal, but if you get a good quality food grade stainless steel bottle, you should be just fine. The only people that may be affected are those with a nickel allergy. Otherwise, metal containers offer a good seal and are often insulated, so if you need a glass to take your juice on the go, these metal containers are the perfect way to keep your drink cold.
Capacity
Capacity is significant because since fruit begins to degrade as soon as it reaches the air, you need a glass that is sized perfectly to fit your average amount of juice. You don’t want it to be too small where you won’t be able to fit everything you need. But you also don’t want it to be too big, or else it will have excess air in the container that will degrade your juice. Ideally, you want a glass that will allow you to store all of the juice that you need while still filling it to the brim, so there is no air left in the container.
Ease of Cleaning
The ease of cleaning may not seem too bad, but you have to remember that these juices are pungent and brightly colored. You need a glass that is strong, nonporous, and ideally can go in the dishwasher, especially if you think that you are going to be juicing everyday.
How Long Can You Keep Juice After Juicing?
When stored in an airtight container, fresh-squeezed juice will usually last 24 to 72 hours after juicing. If you need to store it longer than that, then it is recommended that you freeze it.
Factors That Affect How Long Fresh Squeezed Juice Will Last
How It Was Juiced
The type of glass you store your juice in is not the only factor in how long it will last. Another significant factor in how long juice will stay fresh depends on the method used to get the juice.
Centrifugal Juicer
During the juicing process, a centrifugal juicer uses a blade and a filter to slice and separate the fruit’s juice from its flesh and skin using centrifugal force. The problem with this style is that the heat from the fast-spinning blades break down nutrients in the juice and exposes it to more air. This aeration further degrades nutrients and expedites rotting.
This method will usually yield juice that will stay fresh for around 24 hours.
Cold Press Juicer
A cold press juicer presses the fruit squeezing out the juice. There is no heat, so there is less enzyme breakdown, and the fruit does not come in contact with nearly as much oxygen during the process.
This method will usually yield juice that will stay fresh for around 72 hours.
Acid Content
Acid content also affects how quickly fruit will degrade. Juices with a high acid content will last longer than fruits that are mostly sugar.
If you have freshly-squeezed juice with a low acid content that you are trying to store, it can help to put in a piece of skin from an acidic fruit like an orange. This will slow down how quickly the juice begins to go bad and allow it to stay fresher for longer.
The Container
You want to store your juice in a container filled to the brim and closed with an airtight seal. This is the best way to maximize freshness and save nutrients.
The Temperature
You need to store your juice in the refrigerator if you want it to stay fresh for any longer than 12 hours.
If you are storing it for longer than 12 hours, it needs to go into the refrigerator. If stored in the fridge, then it will usually stay fresh for around 48 hours.
If you are storing it for more than 48 hours, then it is recommended you freeze the juice. If you do freeze your juice, make sure that you leave 1/4 inch of space at the top to accommodate expansion when the juice freezes.
